Shaffer SCORE San Felipe

OAKLAND, CA     MARCH 13, 2012   Shaffer-Motorsports car #401 won the San Felipe 250 in Class 4 last weekend in Baja, Mexico.  After a long week of prerunning and a 24 hour turn around to the US for a rebuilt transaxle, the team made the mad dash to the finish line with only 12 minutes separating them from second.  “It was quite a race.  From being down at the half way point, then making a great pass at RM194 for the lead, then watching Daniel put some time on them, we just focused on keeping the sprint up,” said Mike Shaffer, driver of record and owner of Shaffer’s Offroad.

Rusty Bray Makes His First Top Ten Finish at King of the Hammers

Rusty Bray KOH

We hit the lakebed on friday feb 3 after weeks of prepping the car and going thru the complete drivetrain with all new parts from Yukon Gear and Axle and Branik Motorsports!  I completely disassembled the Radflo shocks and installed new seals, rod ends, and synthetic fork oil.  Once on the lakebed, we rechecked all our work and began shock tuning with Glenn and the guys from Radflo Suspension.  Glenn had us make a few changes to the front coilovers and then we started Prerunning the course.  My crew, which contained co-driver Mike "Fish' Hullfish, Kevin "Mayor" Durbin, Mike Wright, Branik crew, and PAC Springs worked like crazy to check over everything.

 JT Taylor KOH

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO    FEBRUARY 15, 2012  -  JT Taylor set forth on his 6th King of the Hammers adventure last week in the same car that he has driven for 5 of those years.  After a high speed tumble during pre-running, the team thrashed to get the car back on all four in time for qualifying.  JT started Fridays race in 68th and finished his race 18.5 miles from the finish line with a blown transfer case.  “When we were 40 miles from the finish line I thought I would get to finish this race, but I got shot in the foot again,” said JT Taylor after recovering the rig. “But the time spent on the lakebed with friends, who I only get to see a couple times a year, makes it worth the trip nonetheless.”

Colorado Springs, CO 2/13/12 -  King of the Hammers did not disappoint this year and was bigger and better than ever. Torchmate Latino Racing Team Debuts at the Baja Orinoquia 1000 Km

Baja Orinoquia

The first race as a Torchmate Latino racing team was full of many emotions, difficult paths, and changing weather which made it difficult for all riders. Having gone through the entire protocol of signing up, loading the paths in the GPS and attending a couple of pilots meetings, Saturday morning we all headed to  one of the most important military bases in Colombia where the rally started.

Baja Orinoquia

The motorbikes were the first to go followed by the rest of the participants. The first few miles were a bit easier since we had so much built up anticipation for the race, but  the miles became heavier, the paths were challenging from stones to mud puddles and lakes and the weather was above 80°. After about 400 kilometers, we reached our first stop where the organizers of the event were accompanied by the village mayor, the police and the army of Colombia. All watched us throughout our exciting  journey. We restocked, ate, slept and prepared for the second leg next day. On the way to the goal we consumed by  the beautiful scenery that nature gave us. Rocks, trails, pits, lakes, and even rain accompanied us every kilometer we travelled. Finally we completed 533 kilometers of difficult and long race.

Best In The Desert’s Bilek Silver State 300 proved to be a good test for the improvements made by the Shaffer-Motorsports crew to the Torchmate 1066 car. Starting in the last class 10 position on Saturday, by the end of the race 1066 finished a very respectable third in class. From the start, driver Daniel Aeberli picked his way through the carnage that was the first half of the race. “Race cars and trucks were broken and crashed all through the technical sections” said co-driver Berne Strom.  Aeberli maintained a solid pace picking up four positions by pit 4 at race mile 161.2. “With all the setup changes we made before the race it took a little while to settle in and get comfortable,” said Aeberli. “Once we got in the groove, the car did everything we asked it to,” he added.

"For me this year’s Baja 1000 started with a phone call from Lance and Camo @ Pirate4x4.com. They were calling to inform me that we would be racing Dave Cole's 4454 car in Class 1. I was very excited for the opportunity to drive in C1. Driving Dave's car in C1 wasn't going to be enough. I wanted to make sure that the Torchmate JeepSpeed would be ready and racing also. Between Dave's car catching fire in Parker and the time that had to be spent to get the Torchmate JS ready - our team had a lot of work on its hands to get ready for the race this year."

Another Race Another Lesson - Silver State 300

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for teams that can repeatedly finish races. I have run a couple of companies, and I have orchestrated what, at the time, seemed like huge projects. I can now conclude that was child’s play. As I looked across the mountain of iron we brought with us to the Silver State 300, I thought we were prepared. Torchmate Racing was able to win this race last year, and I was determined to repeat that this year. Jessie Haines and Mike Aiello joined our efforts with the 4499 car. We brought the 7231 truck, and after last second adjustments, radio checks, and breakfast we were ready. Logistics and preparation wins races, and I was in charge of logistics. We had a great crew and confidence was high. I was fortunate enough to get to drive our 7231 truck and with the help of my co-pilot Nick Sosha I was confident we had what it would take. Until…."

TORCHMATE RACING BAJA 1000 RACE REPORT

Baja 1000 Torchmate Team Truck

"The Baja 1000 is the toughest off-road race in the world. Some are longer and some are rougher, but no other competition creates the same challenge. The race is equally hard to explain. It is frustrating, rewarding, threatening, hospitable, exhausting, and beautiful all at the same time. There is triumph, injury, breakage, and even death. Locals build traps and throw whatever is in reach at the occupants, in our case, a well placed orange. To understand it, you must experience it. I thought I had during previous Baja races but learned valuable lessons this year. " Read on...

TORCHMATE COMPLETES ROOKIE 7200 DESERT SEASON IN 2ND PLACE

"After a long and successful 2009 campaign, the racing season for the Torchmate team has concluded with the BITD Henderson Desert Classic. The race was seemingly simple compared to the challenges of the Baja 1000 yet still an extremely rough and dusty course. The team of Greg Jones and Nick Socha would start the 240 mile, 4 lap race. Lap races cause the course to become extremely chewed up and increase danger as overall leaders will lap the slower classes." TORCHMATE RACING NABS FIRST 7200 DESERT WIN

"Casey Folks of Best in the Desert says, “Life is an adventure. Come live your adventure with Best in the Desert.” It’s not just a slogan. Adventure is the one word I come back to time and again to describe off-road racing. Things can be going smoothly before a dramatic change occurs and all is thought lost. This is due to harsh environment in which we race. The desert has a variety of terrain that no other form of racing can boast - smooth roads, rocky silt, water, and dust. In the desert, things can change in an instant but the net result is always the same – grand adventure." Read more on how Bill Kunz and Brad Lovell took the checkered flag!

VEGAS TO RENO 1000-MILE DESERT RACE

Vegas to Reno...The Long Way"Vegas to Reno is the longest and toughest point to point race in the United States. It is 1000 miles of rocks, silt, whoops, and danger. It is hard to draw comparison of this race to anything else in the present day. It is a relic. Entering it is a way to turn back time and experience the peril, pride, and freedom that the west held before being tamed by modern America. It is a strenuous race, death defying at times, and
extremely costly. Why even bother with it? The answer comes from the soul. It allows our team along with hundreds of others to face challenge and test our abilities. It is a reprieve into a world that boys read about in adventure books and a way to trade all the safety of society for the freedom of the untamed wild." Read on...

THE ADVENTURE OF THE BAJA 500

Baja 500

"I am used to sitting behind the wheel. Holding on to it helps your body absorb harsh bumps and it gives you a general sense that you control your fate. This was my third race as navigator in the Torchmate Ranger and up to this race, I have always felt comfortable. TORCHMATE ROLLS THE DICE AT TERRIBLES TOWN 250

Terribles Town 250"Anyone other than a fighter pilot would be shocked at the sight of an unlimited desert truck screaming through the terrain. Having participated in my third desert race, I am still awestruck by the power, violence, and danger of these machines. Soon after the start of the Terrible’s Town 250, I stood in Pit #2
and watched a distinct trail of dust rise 10 miles away. The dot at the head of the plume quickly made its way around the mountain range until I could see a dust cloud rise above the near horizon. Tension could be felt in the pits as everyone rose from their chairs and inched toward the course. Hands went up and everyone cheered. I caught sight of the leader. The truck floated over the bumps like a hovercraft and suddenly lurched sideways. The driver was undeterred and never let off the throttle. He got it straight 123456

again and shot by us at well over 100 mph. The roar of the engine was deafening and the top layer of dirt and rock literally rose behind the tires. Rocks pelted our pit trucks over 20’ away and I felt the excitement of a little boy at Christmas." Click here to read on.
